Geography Challenge 2013
This years competition has got underway, and the range of ideas has been sensational so far, below is a brief summary of the presentations:
8J Group 1
"Every two minutes somebody is diagnosed with cancer..." This group introduced their geographic issue (global diseases) by grabbing the audiences attention using well researched statistics. They highlighted the existing range of medications created from natural bio-chemistry found within the rainforest, and how more research is still required to discover more natural cures.
To help with this research they would use charity funding to create the "illness machine," a device that would help to speed up the recovery process and develop new medications from a range of plants.
8J Group 2
"Insta-grow" is an Eco-friendly initiative to create a fertilizer that will speed up the photosynthesis process and produce more oxygen. The fertilizer would also reduce current dangerous levels of CO2, and thereby tackle the increasing risk of climate change. The product would also be part of development packages to aid farmers in the developing world
8J Group 3
"Slave Aid" explored the shocking levels of child labour across the world. The group created a charity that would provide children with a way out of poverty and supply support packs to help alert abused individuals of the support available for them. The charity would rely on donations from the public, and questions were raised about the sustainability of the idea.
8J Group 4
The Animal Appreciation Charity was the most
emotional presentation from this class. They opened with a tragic story of an abused dog that was tied up for over 7 years! In response to the growing numbers of stray animals the charity would raise funds and target other organisations that support these unfortunate souls.
8J Group 5
Help the Homeless launched a homeless shelter that would stop people sleeping on the streets. This shelter would be compact enough, almost like a pod, to be placed within designated urban areas. It would attempt to tackle the rise in homelessness, and provide a short-term solution, However this group were asked about the cost of running such shelters, and how/where they would get enough money to set these shelters up nationwide.
8J Group 6
STR - Save the Rainforest is an organisation that would sell sustainable goods produced by small-scale organisations based in the rainforest. They would raise awareness about deforestation and tackle illegal logging by protecting the endangered biome. Goods such as bracelets and furniture would be individually hand crafted, and more money from the products would go to the producers and local indigenous populations.
