Ridley Hall 2013 - Day 2

Today witnessed the passing of almost 2000 years as we visited two world famous sites, Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda. We arrived in a dramatic blizzard at our first stop, and set of across the most beautiful section of the Wall. Following some tricky climbs and many hilarious slips from Carys Kennedy, the gang managed to march across milecastles and forts and discover about the life of a frontier Roman in 122AD.

Once warm the Ridley warriors then visited the Roman Empire Museum and watched a 3-D spectacular highlighting the importance of Hadrian's endeavour. The film also emphasised the size of Vindolanda and how the working fort would have looked some 1700 years ago. This knowledge aided them for the final learning activity of the day, a first hand visit to the live excavation of Vindolanda. The children walked through a latrine, witnessed the bath house and had a drink in the tavern. After witnessing the film the pupils really appreciated the scale of the fort, and enjoyed examining the tablets that are proudly on display.

It is important to mention that two people had birthday's today, Tom Pinder and Doug Oakes. As a celebration treat the guys went bowling in Hexham and Ben Rivers scored a superb 118. This score was only second to Mr. Morris who demonstrated great skill and determination in posting a dominant 130. At the other end was Mr. Barnes who struggled without the barriers to score a feeble 59, with a non scoring run a seven!

Once again a great day, lets get those walking boots ready for the Lake District tomorrow.

Ridley 2013 Day 1

Day 1

40 kids arrived at 8am on Bank Holiday Monday ready and raring to go...where we were unsure as the staff at Killhope had informed us last Thursday that the lead mine was under 4ft of snow! However by 9.30am we had the phone call informing us that we had the all clear and that driver Lee could get his coach across the dales.

On the way we stopped off at the services to buy the traditional mascot, however Jess had bought the last big bear therefore we had to settle for a Mr. J sized pocket bear. Mr. Morris suggested that we should name the bear in honour of our boss Miss Whetstone as the whole trip is down to the months of hard work that she has put in, and unfortunately she cannot make the trip due to illness. Therefore may we introduce "J-bear," who was carried down't pit by Olivia.

Once at Killhope the pupils have explored the life of a miner, including a trip onto the levels dug into the hillside. Here the kids learnt about the explosive dangers that lay ahead for many of the workers. Some of the subsequent deaths were well dramatized during the evening role play activity, the best group winning a seasonal chocolate egg.

Before lights out there was a quick cream egg hunt around the Ridley grounds, and 50 eggs were well hidden and then well found within seconds. Overall a fantastic end to a great first day, let's hope for more good weather and plenty of laughter.

This year the Hayfield School are going absolutely bonkers for comic relief. There is so much happening within school this Friday; from wearing something silly to creating a money mountain with loose change.
