The Joy of Statistics

Year 9 argue their point!

At the Hayfield we expect students to start GCSEs at the beginning of Y9. This has numerous benefits, but also some glaring disadvantages. One such example was in today's Y9 lesson on climate change, thanks to the brilliant guys at The University of Sheffield (no bias intended) it is easy to highlight trends across the globe, especially related to carbon emissions. And this image was easily interpreted  however some vocal sections of the class did not grasp the rather basic idea that as a nation we are far more densely populated in relation to land mass than say the US.

Note to all Y9D students...I am not saying that we have a bigger population than America, just larger relative per sq mile. So be aware of the use and wording of statistics...

This next image gives more detail about population density within the UK itself, when looking at Population Dynamics this image may be used again, so keep your eyes peeled. We encourage you to explore the fabulous website www.worldmapper.org if you fancy playing around with cartography.
