Countdown! The KS3 Mock Week
These posters have been popping up around the department for the last week or so...
In a week Y7&8 will be tested on what they have learnt throughout the year. One question that has been echoing down the corridor is: "...but sir we are not taking Geography next year so why do we need a test?" This may well be true for a number of Y8s, however the Humanities department believes that having a summer mock week will prepare you to perform better when the real exam week starts in Y11.
With recent changes to the GCSE (or potentially the I-level) more pressure will be placed on you to achieve the best result with only one chance. Therefore the mock week is here to give you the opportunity to practise the art of revision and time management. These tests are not all about your ability in a certain subject, but also about how you can cope with a number of subjects demanding deadlines all at once.
Hopefully over the course of this week you will have created a revision timetable and learnt about all the different methods and techniques available to your personal learning style. Below is an example of a 'learning poster,' produced by Beth Miller Y8 who is certainly managing her commitments well.

3D Contour Lines with Y7
As a department we have decided to use this webspace as a site to not only keep you up to date with recent geography news and relay messages about homework deadlines etc, but to also highlight the excellent examples of learning happening all around school.
One example is a recent Y7 homework project. The brief was to create a 3D map using the various methods of showing relief on a map, and below are some of the superb examples in this week.

The Learning Environment
As the cleaners (and Miss Whetstone) are constantly asking me to tidy up HUM2, I have decided to come up with a plan for the classroom. This is an example of another Humanities room in a different school, what do you think? Since you lot are the main people who spend most of your time in the classroom, what are your opinions from a pupils perspective. Please leave some comments on what you feel should be in your 'dream,' classroom.

Memory Maps (Outside with 7E)
Despite experiencing yet another wet and wild period in our local weather, I find myself praying for rain before Mr Jackson (site manager) discovers the remains of what was quite an active Y7 mapping lesson. Following an introduction to 'memory maps,' the pupils had the chance to walk around school and visualise the building and its surroundings for 5mins. They then teamed up with nothing more than a piece of chalk and the images in their memory, and were asked to draw the school plan on the new tarmac. Hence why I am now attempting a rain dance as we speak to help clear away the chalky depictions.
Some work is below, and interestingly enough the Y10s on lunch used the pictures for some good old hopscotch!
PS. Apologies for the chalk lines left on the ground, although a couple of days will see them erode away with our appalling weather!

Ridley Hall 2013 - Day 3
Superb weather meant for an awesome day studying glaciation surrounded by the sensational Grisdale Beck U-shaped valley. Once the pupils realised that they were not in Scotland, they enjoyed the 6.74 mile trek through drumlins, scree and farmer's fields. Whilst sat at one site they looked at many features including arêtes, corries and pyramidal peaks.
As you can tell the tarn was under snow, and conditions were tough higher up the hill, therefore we did not tackle the steep climb to the summit. However the troops did enjoy an ice-cream when back at base.
Once back we all attempted a field sketch highlighting the keywords that we have learnt today, below are Mr. Morris and Mr Barnes' attempts...guess which one is which.
